Losing our best friend - need opinions.

Our beloved dog, Cody, was bleeding into his abdomen last Wednesday. We took him into the vet, they drained it and after a few ultrasounds and a CT scan we now know he has a mass near his right adrenal gland that had ruptured and caused the bleeding.

He is no longer actively bleeding and is home with us. He is eating and really sweet and acting his usual self. We were sent home with the understanding his only option for treatment would be a very risky surgery in a very vascular area (that one doctor said may have a survival chance of only 10%). It is also very expensive (money we have had to borrow). We have to let them know by tomorrow what our decision is, surgery or not.

The mass is a whopping 10cm. They cannot tell if the entire size is made up of the tumor or also a blood clot around the mass. Despite the size it has not metastasized (based on the CT) and we have no way of knowing how long/fast it has been growing.

The other option is keeping him at home and enjoying the rest of whatever time he has left. It can rupture again at any moment or grow larger and eventually constrict his Vena Cava. We are walking on egg shells, with my girlfriend and I taking turns being home from work to be with him…

Everyone I’ve spoken to has said do the surgery if it is his only chance of having more time… we are so conflicted.

I just want to hear from other pet parents, if you were faced with this impossible decision, what would you do?

TLDR: Our dog has an adrenal mass. Only treatment option is a surgical removal which poses a significant risk and it is likely he passes on the table. The alternative is leaving it alone until it kills him. How do we choose?
