I thought I had rescued a dog. Turns out, he rescued me.

I thought I had rescued a dog. Turns out, he rescued me.

The day I met Tango, he was the smallest one at the shelter. Quiet, with these deep eyes that looked like they’d seen too much. I wasn’t even planning to adopt that day. But he walked up to me, leaned his head on my knee, and that was it.

I brought him home thinking I was saving him. But now I know he saved me.

Tango was with me through breakups, job losses, family fights, nights I didn’t think I’d make it through. When everything felt like it was falling apart, he was always there — tail wagging, eyes shining, just waiting to remind me that I mattered to someone.

He had this thing where he’d nudge my hand if I was sad, like he was saying, “I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

And he never did… until he had to.

He got sick fast. The vet said we didn’t have much time. So I did what I could: I held him every night, I fed him his favorite snacks, I told him over and over what a good boy he was. I think he knew.

He passed away lying next to me, his paw over my arm — like he was comforting me one last time.

It’s been weeks now, and I still wait to hear his paws on the floor, or the jingle of his collar. The silence is deafening.

If you’re lucky enough to have a dog by your side, please hug them extra tight tonight. Let them sleep in your bed. Give them that piece of cheese. Tell them they’re your best friend.

Because one day, the house will be too quiet.

And all you’ll wish for is one more tail wag.
