Why does my dog do this?

Benny is a 2 yr old rescue that is really affectionate... to the point of being clingy. Whenever I lie down on the couch, he insists on wedging himself between the couch and my back and will actually fall asleep buried behind me. Is he just being affectionate, or is he showing signs of insecurity?
