I need some dog-owner opinions because I think I’m overthinking this 😂😭
I have a 3-year-old male Corgi-poo named Diesel. I adopted him from a shelter about 5 months ago. His previous owners surrendered him/left him behind but kept their other two dogs, so I’ve been really conscious of making sure he knows he is safe and wanted.
Now someone I know is about to have to surrender their 1-year-old female dog because their apartment won’t allow her. She’s supposedly house-trained, up to date on vaccines, very calm, and sweet. I was told she’s a Standard Poodle, although honestly she looks more like a doodle to me (I attached her picture).
And now I’m seriously considering taking her.
But I feel SO guilty about the idea of having two dogs instead of one. Diesel is my buddy. It’s been just me and him for the last 5 months, and I’m scared that bringing another dog into the house could make him feel like he’s being replaced or that I don’t love him as much anymore.
He seems to like other dogs, but obviously that’s very different from having another dog living in his home 24/7.
I would absolutely do a proper introduction before making any decision. I’d want to bring her around Diesel, see how they interact, and make sure they’re both comfortable. I’m not going to just bring a strange dog home and expect him to deal with it.
For people who went from one dog to two... how did your first dog handle it? Did they seem jealous or upset at first? Did they eventually enjoy having a companion?
I think I’m mostly looking for reassurance that I’m not going to emotionally traumatize my little guy by giving him a sister. 😂😭
Because apparently my brain has decided that adopting a second dog automatically means Diesel is going to sit in the corner thinking, “So this is how you repay me.” 😂
