| His name was Clive and he was the best dog ever. I work from home and he was with me 24/7. He was my best friend. He was only 4.5 years old. Out of nowhere one day he just wasn’t eating or drinking much. The first vet did tests and assumed he was just sick. Eventually we went to a emergency vet and the ultrasound found a giant ulcer that we all now think was most likely cancerous. It all happened so fast over the course of 2 weeks and we had no other options. Making this decision was the hardest decision of my life. The emergency vet was amazing. They let me and my wife stay overnight with him while we waited for the final reports if the ulcer was healing or not. When we found out it wasn’t healing, we couldn’t let him be in pain anymore. They let us sit in a private room, I held him while they ended his pain. He had lost so much weight over the past 2 weeks that where my hand was, I was able to feel his heartbeat. To feel his heartbeat go from such a strong steady beat to nothing absolutely broke me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget that feeling of his light going out on my hand. Work has been miserable today. I hate not seeing him next to me. I miss going on walks with him. It absolutely sucks, but I know we did the right thing. I love you Clive. You taught me how to care for someone and become a dad, you were the best older brother to our 2 year old son, and you made our family whole. I will always keep your favorite orange and blue ball on my desk along with a photo of you. Nothing can ever replace the love I had for you, and I will never stop missing you.
