Leaving our dog with family friends for a week… will he be sad?

My wife and I are going overseas for one week, and for the first time ever, we won’t be bringing our dog with us.

He’s a 1.5-year-old male Border Collie, and we’ve had him since he was 2 months old, so he’s really grown up with us.

Honestly, emotionally this feels much harder for us than for him because he’s basically been part of everything we do.

He’ll be staying with my wife’s childhood best friend — they’ve known each other forever. She genuinely loves dogs, is very responsible, and already knows him because he’s met her multiple times before. We fully trust her.

She even buys him toys and treats whenever she sees him, so we know he’ll be cared for and loved.

He’ll be staying at her apartment with access to a large enclosed balcony area, and she’ll definitely walk him in the morning and at night. Sometimes her sister may come home during the day and walk him too.

Logically, I know this is probably much better than putting him in a boarding facility or pet hotel. It’s a stable home environment with someone familiar and caring.

But emotionally, I still feel really guilty thinking about him waiting for us or wondering where we went.
