Help please!

I'm writing to ask for your advice. My 10-year-old female Dashchhund died unexpectedly two months ago, and we had to leave my 12-year-old male Chihuahua home alone last weekend. When we returned, he was hoarse from howling, something he'd never done before. Do you think it's too soon to adopt an older female dog to keep him company?
