| For those who don’t know, Orelha was a community dog — loved, protected, and cared for by everyone in the Praia Brava area of Florianópolis. He was happy, already a little old, known by everyone, gentle with everyone. He was one of those dogs who belonged to everyone and trusted everyone. One night, four young people from so-called “good families” called him over. Orelha went to them joyfully, tail wagging, believing he was being called to play. Instead, he was met with unimaginable cruelty. Those four young people brutally mutilated him. And when I say brutally, I mean with a level of coldness and cruelty that is hard to comprehend. Nails were driven into his head. He suffered severe cranial trauma. His jaw and facial bones were fractured. And the most heartbreaking part — the part that brought tears to my eyes — is that Orelha did not die right away. He was only euthanized at the veterinary clinic the following day. That means he spent an entire night alive, in agony, suffering through pain, fear, and unimaginable trauma. As horrifying as this act itself is the possibility that these four adolescents may face no consequences. They are relatives of very influential people in Florianópolis and may well walk away without punishment. What I can do may seem small — sharing this story, keeping it alive, spreading the truth — but silence only protects cruelty. By speaking out, by refusing to forget, we may help ensure that Orelha’s death was not in vain. It is important to remember that many adolescents who commit acts of violence against animals often go on to commit violence against people. What breaks my heart the most is imagining Orelha trusting them, approaching with joy, tail wagging, only to be betrayed in the most brutal way. I want to believe that by demanding justice now, other Orelhas around the world — other innocent dogs — can be spared. Justice matters. Accountability matters. And compassion matters. Justice for Orelha. May those responsible be held accountable for what they did. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION. [link] [comments] |
