Meet Eclipse. She rides the bus alone. She didn’t need a leash. She knew the way.

Seattle is home to one of the most independent “business owners” in canine history—a black Labrador named Eclipse who became a global icon for her solo morning commutes. Her legendary journey began in 2015 by pure accident when her owner, Jeff Young, was finishing a cigarette at a bus stop and didn’t notice Eclipse had already hopped onto the arriving bus. Instead of panicking, Eclipse stayed on for her usual route and exited perfectly at the local dog park, where she was later found happily playing. Realizing she knew the city better than most humans, her owner began letting her make the trip alone two to three times a week, complete with her own bus pass attached to her collar.

Eclipse quickly transformed from a local curiosity into a full-blown brand ambassador for King County Metro. She spent her days navigating the city’s public transit, dining at dog-friendly restaurants, and even catching movies, all while greeting her fellow passengers with a wagging tail. She even starred in her own music video, “Bus Doggy Dog,” cementing her status as a true Seattle celebrity. For years, she was a symbol of urban independence, proving that with a little trust and a lot of street smarts, a dog could master the complex transit system of a major U.S. city just to get to her favorite park.

Sadly, the city of Seattle recently said a final goodbye to its favorite passenger. At the age of 10, Eclipse passed away peacefully shortly after being diagnosed with cancerous tumors. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of the thousands of commuters she cheered up during their daily rides and the transit authority that officially recognized her as a local treasure. She didn’t just ride the bus; she brought an entire community together and showed the world that some of the best passengers on the road don’t need a steering wheel—just a destination and a sense of adventure.
